| Old Tobe was the most prized horse
of this breeding herd who possessed the best of the most desired characteristics:
he was sturdy, had such a calm disposition that children could ride him
bareback, and he had a comfortable four-beat gait. From him, most of today's
Rocky Mountain horses are descended. |
 |
Realizing that a centralized breed organization was needed to prevent
this line of horses from becoming extinct, in 1986 a group of breeders
founded the Rocky Mountain Horse Association.
The Rocky Mountain horse is a medium-sized (14.2 to 16 hands) horse known
for its tractable temperament and comfortable gait. Most distinguishing
is its coat color, which is most commonly black liver or a liver chestnut,
often with blonde flaxen mane and tail. However, any solid color is allowed.
