Horses
    Updated August 17, 2002
This page has various photos of horses accompanied by information and links. The subject will change as I update the page periodically. I plan to attend various horse events and visit farms in the near future, so check back on this page.

Here you see pictured a group of Arabian horses dressed in "Native Costume." These photos were taken at last season's Renaissance Festival.

I have not been able to find a great deal of information regarding the Native Costumes as it pertains to Arabian Horses (and I've tried!). This style of dress originated in the Middle East and South Asia, where for centuries they have frequently dress their animals in colorful, fancy decorations, especially during special events. To exhibit their horses' native origin, Arabian owners began dressing their horses in similar costumes as in the Middle East for parades and other show-and-tell events. In time, Arabian horse shows incorporated the dress into a professional class called the Native Costume. Every year hundreds of Arabian horse owners show their beautiful Arabs in costumes at the shows and win prizes. However, most of the costumes seen in the American shows are much more elaborate and "sparkly" than the authentic dress that was used in the Middle East.

Whether authentic or not, the native costumes on these horses only add to the Arabian's natural beauty. Watching an Arabian in native costume gallop around the ring is a spectacular sight!

Below are some links to web sites with more information on dress in the Middle East:

Costumes of the Levant: General information on various Arabic clothing (for the humans, not the horses).   Muslim Clothing, Jewelry, and Makeup: this webpage also includes a couple of illustrations about their clothing, including muslim women's hijab and the burka (head & face coverings).
Al-Hannah Online Islamic Clothing Store: This online store includes photos of their clothing for sale. This clothing is authentic, and even includes a Plus Sizes section! It also has for sale women's head and face coverings (hijab and burka), complete with photos.   Arab Horse Store: And online store that sells authentic halters and saddles, and Bedouin riders' costumes and accessories. The store is based in Jordan in the Middle East and ships all over the world.

To the right are links to breeds I photographed at the MN Horse Expo. Also is information for each breed, and links to web sites with more in-depth information (usually my sources) and lists of farms. They vary from some very popular and well-known breeds to some that few have heard about. All are fascinating and beautiful in their own right. I intend to add more breeds as time goes on, so keep an eye on this section.
