Horses: American Bashkir Curly
American Bashkir Curly

It is believed that curly horses have existed for thousands of years, including Russia and Eastern Europe, which is where the Curly got its name. However, it has always occured only rarely as a recessive gene, making curly-haired horses little known throughout the world.

Curly horses were first discovered in the U.S. in the deserts of Nevada in a herd of wild Mustangs. The Damele family saw these horses and captured them. They then crossed these mustangs with other breeds such as Arabians, Morgans, and Quarter Horses to improve their quality. The American Bashkir Curly was born! Head shot of an American Bashkir Curly The American Bashkir Curly Horse Registry was founded in 1971, and today there are approximately 2000 Bashkir Curlies in the U.S. and Canada, and their numbers are growing. The Curly pictured here sure was an attention getter!

This Curly is owned by Rush River Curly Farm and was the only Curly at the Expo. Unfortunately, I did not get a chance to obtain the farm's contact information. If they return next year, I will try to get their information.
